he Sailun Terramax
A/Ts are one of the
most affordable
tyres on the market.
After running a set
on our old 80 Series Camera
4WD and absolutely punishing
them up at Cape York, we
wanted to see how well they
performed over a 10,000km
torture test!
To really test out these tyres,
we wanted to see how they
they’d handle multiple terrains.
In the sand, we aired the tyres
down to 18psi all round and the
sidewalls bellied out nicely,
which is perfect for soft sand as
it gives you a larger footprint.
Even the heavy GU Patrol test
vehicle floated over the soft
sand surprisingly well.
Mud isn’t exactly the best
mate of all terrains and whilst
these tyres weren’t as effective
as a dedicated mud tyre in the in
the slop, for an All-Terrain they
performed surprisingly well. The
secret to this is the wider tread
blocks on the tyre that help to
clean the mud from the tread,
and are aggressive enough to
grip and bite for more traction.
One thing we noticed is that the
shoulder tread design is like a
saw blade. Each edge grabs the
mud and moves you forward.
On road, these tyres were
amazingly quiet. They still have
a lot of wear left in them and
tyres usually get noisy when
they’re worn down, but these
are very quiet. In terms of wear,
they’ve worn evenly across the
tread and shoulders. We gave
the Patrol a wheel alignment
when the tyres were fitted, and
rotated all five tyres at 5,000km.
keeping on top of this ensures
even wear across all the tyres.
One area that the Terramax
exceled was on the gravel. They
offered good steering because of
the radial grooves and solid
centre tread rib plus they’re
excellent under braking on loose
surfaces.
