PROTECT

YOUR SIGHT

If you saw Neil’s story in our May/
June issue, you will have seen the
consequences he lives with from not
regularly getting his eyes checked.
[If you missed it, sadly Neil – like
many – lost his sight due to diabetes].
“Every person with diabetes is at risk
of eye damage and vision loss because
diabetes can damage blood vessels in
the eye,” says Diabetes Australia CEO
Professor Greg Johnson. “[We think]
around 630,000 people aren’t getting
their eyes checked, and this means
eye damage is often identified
too late when treatment is less
effective and more costly.”
A new national
program, KeepSight,
is designed to send
you reminders and
prompts for regular
diabetes eye checks. This
will allow problems (such as
diabetic retinopathy) to be
detected and treated early, thus
preventing further damage.

Struggling to ease your mind from
running a marathon through your
thoughts? Then yogic sleep may be
a technique for you to try.
More commonly referred to as
Yoga Nidra, this practice encourages
you to bring your body to a restorative
state, calming your nervous system’s
fight-or-flight response, ultimately
decreasing stress and anxiety and
improving your ability to have a
peaceful, well-rested sleep.
Unlike other forms of yoga, Nidra
classes are suitable for everyone,
from children to seniors, varying from
five minutes to 1 hour in length. This
guided relaxation class will begin as
you lay in Savasana (corpse pose –
on your back with your palms open
upwards and feet relaxed) and you
are encouraged to make yourself
as comfortable as possible to truly
deactivate your mind. Following the
instructor’s voice, you will be guided
through various tension spots in
your body and mind, and release
any associated negativity.
As you learn the techniques, you’ll
be able to adapt them in the comfort
of your own bed, helping with blissful
sleep! To find a Nidra class near you,
