RISKY LIVING

The case for healthy eating
and drinking and making
better lifestyle choices is
certainly stronger off the back
of the new ‘Global Burden of
Disease Study’. The research
covered almost 200 countries
and revealed that the biggest
threat to our life expectancy
comes from our bad diets and
unhealthy lifestyles, which
attribute to 70 per cent of
deaths. Interestingly, fatalities
caused by infectious diseases
have fallen, however this is
cancelled out by the rise in
deaths caused by non-
infectious diseases affected by
diet and lifestyle — such as
heart disease, stroke, cancer
and diabetes. The study data
found the top risk for deaths
is high blood pressure, an
outcome of obesity and
insufficient exercise.

HIGH-ALTITUDE NETWORKING

Momentum Ski Festival will take place at the ski resort of Verbier,
Switzerland, from 2–5 February. The occasion brings together the City
Ski Championships and the Financial Times Alpine Forum business event,

NOTES ON SYRIA
In January 2016, as millions of refugees
fled war-torn Syria, Man Booker
Prize-winning author Richard Flanagan
and Archibald Prize winner Ben Quilty
travelled to Lebanon, Greece and Serbia
to meet the people forming that mass exodus. The
resulting tome, Notes on an Exodus, comprises
Flanagan’s words and Quilty’s illustrations in a moving
portrait of the people they met. It’s a glimpse into the
wretched world of those 5 million people fleeing their
homes, seeking sanctuary from war, death and
suffering. Flanagan and Quilty tell some of their
personal stories, showing the strength of these refugees
whose lives have been ripped into pieces. “Refugees are
not like you and me,” Flanagan writes. “They are you
and me. That terrible river of the wretched and the
damned flowing through Europe is my family.”
Notes on an Exodus is available via Penguin Australia
and all sale proceeds go directly to World Vision.
