UPSIZING HAS ITS DOWNSIDES
With her last home a two-bedroom
townhouse, Lauren was confronted with
a problem she’d never had before – huge
rooms with yawning spaces to fill. To
give them human scale, she played with
pattern and texture, incorporating a velvet
sofa, flatweave rug, woven cushions
and timber. And when confronted with
“a weird nook in the open plan, with no
purpose,” she asked her joiner to create
an inviting built-in retreat (opposite),
complete with storage underneath.

MAKE EVERY CORNER COUNT
Despite the home’s size, clutter proved
a no-go for Lauren. “With so many
windows, there’s not much wall space
and little chance to include shelves,” she
says. So she had to edit her treasures
and make any vacant walls work for the
family’s living needs. For instance, an
idle space near the entry from the garage
has been given a sense of arrival. Wall
hooks at random intervals display special
finds, while texture in the hats, bags,
bench and rug adds a lovely warmth. A

Tactile perfection
Lauren chose a Jardan
rug, recycled wool throw
from the National Trust
Shop in the UK and one
of her own cushions to
ramp up the comfort
stakes in the living space.
