HELLO

T

here was much anticipation
ahead of Ironman Cairns this
year - the Ironman debut of
superstar Javier Gomez, the
return of Mirinda Carfrae to Ironman racing
post baby and one of the most impressive
start lists, on the men’s side, we’ve seen
assembled on Australian shores. So often
these ‘big’ races don’t live up to the hype,
but Cairns certainly didn’t disappoint.
A few of my highlights from the race:

• Gomez was stunning on debut,
not surprising he is a true champion of
this sport. Who else is looking forward
to the Frodo vs. Gomez battle on
The Big Island!
• Rinny didn’t show up just to stamp her
ticket to Kona, and even though she
didn’t win (second is a mighty result),
she definitely has us excited for the
showdown with Daniela in October.
• The surprise packet was Teresa Adam;
in just her second Ironman race ever
she nailed the win against some
big-name opponents. Impressive.
• Braden Currie is a jack of all trades; he
races everything you can think of from
ITU, XTERRA, half Ironman, Ironman
and throw in a bit of adventure racing
like Coast to Coast. This was a big win,
he might not be a household name in
triathlon globally, but he should be.
• Terenzo Bozzone is doing everything
right - another race, another great result.
• Beth McKenzie’s return to racing was
impressive and emotional. It’s been a
long two years.
