The whirly whirly, or willy willy, or dust devil, or gustnado, or sand pillar is a fair-weather
tornado that forms where there is hot air near the surface that rises through a pocket of
cooler, low pressure air.
While this happens plenty in the desert (it it one of the primary weather patterns observed
on the surface of Mars), the High Country provides the perfect environment for these
strange formations as well in the summer months.
I watched at least a dozen form on the crest of Blue Rag in the afternoon heat, pushing
themselves around the trig. It was the rst time I’d seen whirly whirlies this high.

It’s cold when you scrape yourself out of
bed long before dawn at the top of a bare
mountain. But when the horizon is ringed
in every direction by pink lines of smoke
haze, you know it’s going to be worth it.
Sunrise is usually bluer, at least from a
photographic perspective. Sunset is when
you get your crazy red light. That has a lot
to do with how particles get blown into the
air by daytime wind, and temperature gra-
dients...but when the mountains are on re,
sunrise can be something else altogether.
The sky is ignited, and all you have to do
is have your wits about you for the three
or four minutes when everything lines up,
when the lens tries to destroy your shot
with are, but ends up capturing some-
thing in the moment that will be gone
again a few seconds later.
You can’t chase it...you just have to be
prepared and to wait.
