Australian Birdkeeper – June-July 2018

automatic trap that ‘usually’ catches the
bird I’m after. However, it also catches
individuals I don’t want and so can
cause undue stress. I also utilise a cage
that hooks over the feeding tray with an
open sliding door and fi shing line. If I’m
prepared to wait, this works well. In this
new complex, I have cut a series of long

Internal walls clad with brush for fi nches and
softbills to nest within

rectangular fl aps on hinges, high above the
viewing windows. By opening the fl ap, all
birds in a particular aviary can be herded
into the walkway and captured easily.
At the time of writing, the aviary
complex has been up and running for fi ve
months and the results to date have been
pleasing. In my next column, I will focus

on feeding and
the species held,
as my personal
avicultural journey
continues.
