I have just been diagnosed
with type 2. I have always
been fit and healthy and
watched my diet. I thought
type 2 was only diagnosed
in people who are
overweight. So why me?
Dr Linjawi says: You are
right that diabetes typically
occurs in people who
are overweight or obese.
While you may not be
overweight, if your genetic
predisposition is very
high, unfortunately the
likelihood of developing
diabetes is still there. The
other thing to consider
is that, because of your
age, while you have been
diagnosed with type 2 you
may in fact have late-onset
type 1. This misdiagnosis
is quite common and oral
medication has little effect
at controlling BGLs and
moving onto insulin sooner
rather than later is required.
The third group who
can develop diabetes are
people who have had
pancreatic damage, say, as a
consequence of pancreatitis
from gall stones at some
point. This has resulted in
the pancreas not able to
produce as much insulin
as it needs.

COULD
CHEESE BE
THE ANSWER?
Belgium-based ActoBio Therapeutics
has received permission from the US
Food and Drug Administration to start a
new clinical trial for type 1 treatment. Drug
AG019 contains
Lactococcus lactis

  • a type of

bacteria that is used to produce buttermilk
and cheese – that ActoBio proposes
could treat early-onset type 1, and
reverse the disease if treated early enough.
