Plant a patio pot
with your favourite
herbs and vegetables
and browse the
farmers market for
low-cost produce.

Consider locavorism
a suggestion rather
than a rule.

LOCAVORISM

Think of this as simply eating locally.
Locavores aim to eat mostly food
that’s grown within a certain distance
from home, usually from small farms
and producers. Forget midwinter
blueberries from halfway around
the world – you’re aiming to save
the environment and support local
businesses while also enjoying
foods at their peak.

“For me, it’s about what’s at the
farmers' market that week,” Strickland
says. “When we eat out together,
my grandmother prefers chain
restaurants, but I’m really sceptical of
the ways they source their ingredients.”
Bottom line: locavorism encourages
you to eat nutritious foods like fresh
fruits, vegetables and lean meats, all
of which can help with blood sugar
control, Sheth says. ■
