when it comes to canadian wildlife icons, they don’t come more recognisable than
these huge, gangly animals that make up the largest member of the deer family. those
who want to catch a sighting of these comical creatures can find them in abundance
in Quebec’s Matane wildlife reserve, located on the gaspé peninsula’s north shore
near the mighty St lawrence river. More than 4,000 moose can be found along the
tranquil waterways and peat bogs located throughout the reserve. the males carry
huge racks of antlers, used to fight for dominance during mating season, through
late summer and into autumn. one of the most unusual characteristics of moose is
the species’ strong swimming ability, and they can be seen diving to the bottom of
lakes – sometimes to depths of five metres or more – to forage for plants growing there.
