Why pay attention?
Newcastle-based interdisciplinary artist Lottie Consalvo is
gaining international interest with works on show from New
Zealand to Mexico in 2018, and prominent exhibitions around
Australia. The artist has come into the spotlight since undertaking
a high-profile residency alongside Marina Abramovic ́ in Sydney,

  1. Last year Consalvo was a finalist in the Cossack Art Award
and Calleen Art Award. Her solo exhibitions in the last 12 months
have included the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Victoria,
Dominik Mersch Gallery, Sydney and NKN Gallery, Melbourne.

What does she do?
Working across painting, performance and sculpture, Consalvo’s
diverse material approaches to her practice are unified by a
muted, minimalist palette. This stripped back approach manifests
in strikingly simple, often high-contrast forms, enabling the artist
to cut straight to the essence of her concept-driven works.

What’s going on?
Notions of psychological shifts pervade Consalvo’s practice;
“ungraspable points,” she calls them, “things that lie within and
become blurred”. Often autobiographical, her works document
emotional responses to fleeting moments in time and the
intangibility of memory.

The artist says...
Of her most recent works, Consalvo says: “I’ve been trying to
paint this horizon line for months. It’s not the landscape that
I’m referring to, but rather the ungraspable nature of it, its
nothingness, its endlessness. Like that feeling of flying – we all
know it because we have all dreamt of it – it’s like that.
