ALAN IBELL
New Zealand-based painter Alan Ibell has been making waves with his tranquil
paintings that use figuration as a way to express a poetic visual experience. Studying
painting at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art in Dunedin, Ibell spent several
years in Melbourne before returning to New Zealand in 2016.
Ibell is interested in the narrative of painting. Incorporating images from dreams,
memories and personal musings, he creates works that speak to moments of
transition, nostalgia and our ongoing search for fulfilment.
“What drew us to Alan’s work was his desire to paint the unimaginable – a
pictorial depiction of psychological space,” says Adrienne Schierning of Sanderson
Contemporary Art, who presents a suite of Ibell's works at Auckland Art Fair 2018.
“The resulting works are stunning – open ended statements that both challenge
the viewer and offer space for contemplation.” With a number of residencies and
art prizes already to his name, Ibell is certainly one to collect now.
