ANDY LELEISI’UAO
Auckland Art Gallery’s senior curator Ron Brownson will never forget
his first encounter with Andy Leleisi’uao’s solo show at Auckland’s
Aotea Centre back in 1996. “His art appeared too raw, too streetwise,
for that polished and pristine space,” he says. “The painter’s furious
response to our society astonished me.”
Leleisi’uao’s paintings offer perceptive and unapologetic commentary
on how we relate to each other and the world around us. “Andy paints
the human experience,” says his Rarotonga gallerist Ben Bergman. “He
sees what makes us who we are. His influence range is enormous, drawing
from ancient and modern history, literary history, pop culture, world
headlines, personal experiences... he rarely leaves a stone unturned.”
Taking out the Wallace Arts Trust Paramount Award last year,
Leleisi’uao’s work has been aquired by the Pataka Museum and Art
Gallery, Porirua; the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa,
Wellington; the Auckland Art Gallery, the Chartwell Collection and
the James Wallace Arts Trust. He is represented by Bergman Gallery
in Rarotonga, Milford Gallery in Dunedin and PG gallery192 in
Christchurch.
