ARIE HELLENDOORN
Psychedelic constellations of texture, pattern and colour
come together in the paintings of Netherlands-born, New
Zealand-based Arie Hellendoorn. Working in the world
between figuration and abstraction, the artist is interested
in the conventions of portraiture and representations of
the human form.
“The aesthetic intensity and variation of Arie’s painting
techniques have always intrigued me,” says David Alsop,
director of Hellendoorn’s Wellington gallery {Suite}.
“Where a figure stops or starts is often ambiguous, moving
interpretation of his work towards abstraction.”
Hellendoorn studied Fine Art at Massey University in
Wellington, graduating in 2007. A swathe of solo and
group shows to his name, Hellendoorn is also represented
by Sullivan+Strumpf, which has galleries in Sydney and
Singapore.
