TROY EMERY
Perhaps best known for his object-based sculptural practice (his colourful faux-
taxidermy animals may spring to mind), Melbourne artist Troy Emery is actually no
one trick, fuchsia pink tassel-covered pony. Sydney’s Martin Browne Contemporary
will be showing a small series of paintings by the artist at Auckland Art Fair 2018.
With thick impasto paint and lurid colours, Emery’s paintings add a comedic
approach to the traditional subject matter of animals, landscapes and Australiana,
exploring and inverting their decorative qualities. “Troy’s work conjures a complex
conversation between naivety, humour and humanity’s fascination with the natural
world,” says his Sydney gallerist Martin Browne. “It is the amalgamation of these
themes that make his work so alluring and wonderfully strange.”
Troy spent his youth in the regional city of Toowoomba in South East Queensland,
relocating to Hobart to attend art school. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art
at the Hobart School of Art, University of Tasmania in 2005, going on to complete
a Masters of Fine Art at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. His work
is held in various private and public collections across Australia.
