This tension gives the works an intriguing,
literally attractive quality that evokes mysterious
alchemy and quixotic science; bringing to mind
the pool of Narcissus or Dumbledore’s Pensieve.
The creation of these works is a meditative process
for Allen; each piece takes a sustained period
of concentration and repetitious action. “It’s
interesting how one finds an ongoing affinity
with a certain material,” says Allen. “There are
inherent qualities or potentials that seize us, asking
to be explored and formed time and again. The
exploration of these qualities has cognitive and
possibly emotional elements.”
Allen’s sustained and rhythmic transformation
of the graphite from one state (loose powder)
to another (a shining, uniform surface) has
a restorative aspect for the artist; the care and
attention given to the material creates a tacit
experience of affirmation and evidence of the
time spent pressing, smoothing and polishing.
After such a lengthy period of solitary studio time,
Allen is pleased to see the finished products out
in the world, at both Auckland Art Fair and his
new representing gallery.
“I am looking forward to the response from
the fair,” he says, “but having a solo exhibition
running concurrently will give interested people
a chance for a slower and deeper engagement
with the works.” Given the almost unfathomable
allure of the shimmering graphite surfaces, a deep
engagement seems sure to reward those who
choose to contemplate them.
