The International Canine
Health Awards are returning
for the sixth year to celebrate
some of the world’s fi nest
researchers and scientists,
whose work has had a positive
impact on the health and
well-being of dogs.
The awards are run by the
Kennel Club Charitable Trust,
with a prize fund totalling
£66,000 donated by Vernon
and Shirley Hill, founders of
Metro Bank, to go towards
new or continued research.
Judges will be drawn from
the veterinary profession
and the world of scientifi c
research, including experts
in each of the short-listed
nominees’ selected fi elds.
The four awards are:
● International Prize in
Canine Health for outstanding
contributions in the fi eld of
canine health and welfare.
● Lifetime Achievement
Award.

● UK Student Inspiration
Awards, which will be
presented to under-graduate
and post-graduate students
studying at a British
veterinary school.
● Breed Health Coordinator
Award — a new award for
individuals from a breed
club or council, who have
demonstrated dedication to
supporting health and welfare
within their breed over the
previous year.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel
Club secretary, says: “The
awards are a fantastic way
of recognising those who
work extremely hard and go
the extra mile to improve
canine health. We encourage
anyone to nominate a peer
or colleague, or perhaps
themselves.”
Nominations should
be made online before
January 30, 2018. Visit http://www.

Police in Devon and Cornwall have
announced that two sniffer dogs have
been trained to help catch paedophiles,
terrorists, and fraudsters, by sniffi ng
out hidden digital storage devices,
such as USB sticks, SD cards, and
hard drives.
Tweed, a 19-month-old Springer
Spaniel, and Rob, a 20-month-old black
Labrador, are said to be the UK’s fi rst
digital detection dogs.
Chief superintendent Jim Nye,
commander for the Alliance Operations
Department which works across the two
forces, says: “These dogs will give the
police a new way to fi ght the threat of
terrorism, paedophiles, and fraudsters.”
The dogs have already proved

themselves to be very successful. On
one warrant, Tweed indicated that
something was hidden inside a cola can
— further investigation revealed that it
was actually a money box with
a number of SD cards hidden inside.
Rob has also indicated a small device
hidden in a drawer, which could easily
have been missed by the human eye.
Both dogs live at home with their
new full-time police dog handlers and,
if they continue to do well, will pave the
way for other dogs to be trained.
