Three London Fire
Brigade investigation
dogs have been
honoured at the
Animal Hero Awards
following their work at
Grenfell Tower, scene
of the tragic fi re in
June, which claimed
many lives.
Sherlock, Murphy, and
Roscoe were fi tted with
special shoes to protect
their paws from sharp
items and debris.
The dogs spent many
hours in the charred
remains of the tower,
helping their handlers,
Paul Osborne and
Mick Boyle.
Sherlock’s handler
Paul says: “I am
incredibly proud
that our dogs have
been recognised for
their work.
“Sherlock never fails
to amaze me every
time we go out on
a job together, and I feel
a great sense of pride
when he fi nds something
that helps with a criminal

investigation.”
Sherlock,
Murphy, and
Roscoe attend
on average
between
180 and 230
incidents a
year. They are highly
trained and can identify
10 ignitable substances,
whether they are
burned, evaporated,
or neat, to determine
whether an accelerant
was used and whether
a blaze was started
deliberately.
The work of fi re dogs
speeds up investigations
and keeps costs down,
as they are much more
effi cient at detection
than machines. They
can also cover a large
area quickly and get
into awkward and small
spaces. Only 14 dogs in
the whole country are
trained to do this work.
London Fire
commissioner Dany
Cotton says: “Our
dogs are an incredibly

valuable asset to the
brigade. Using their
keen sense of smell
has helped the Brigade
Fire Investigation
Team fi nd the cause
of thousands of fi res,
including the tragic
Grenfell Tower fi re.”
Five-year-old Cocker
Spaniel, Murphy, and
13-year-old Springer
Spaniel, Roscoe, retired
along with their handler,
Mick, who completed 30
years of service with the
brigade in August.
Mick became one
of the brigade’s fi rst
dog handlers 12 years
ago, taking on Roscoe.
In 2013, he added
Murphy to the team and,
between them, the dogs
have attended more
than 2,000 incidents.
