ew York-based dog photographer

Elias Weiss Friedman, aka The

Dogist, has taken over 25,

photographs of dogs from all over the

world. Over the past few years, he has

become an internet sensation, with over

2.7 million Instagram followers and a highly

successful blog.

In 2015, he released his fi rst photography

book, ‘The Dogist’, which captured dogs’

characters and spirit, and became a ‘New

York Times’ best-seller with over 100,

copies sold. Following its success, Elias has

created a follow-up book called ‘The Dogist

Puppies’, which includes hundreds of

pictures of dogs when they’re at their most

adorable — during puppyhood!

Elias explains: “My new book contains

never-before-seen images of puppies from

all over the world. I’ve been to Switzerland

to take pictures of St Bernards, Ireland to

photograph Border Collies, and Canada

to take pictures of Nova Scotia Duck

Tolling Retrievers.”

Although being a dog photographer

is a dream job, Elias admits that

photographing puppies isn’t quite as simple

as you’d think: “Puppies are very easily

distracted, and most of the puppies

I photographed were very young so weren’t

obedience trained.

“Making squeaking noises was one thing

that worked well, as they tended to snap

out of what they were doing and you got

their attention for long enough to take

a photo,” explains Elias. “Although, the

other thing about puppies is that they

spend around 23 hours of the day sleeping,

so I had to include cute photos of them

doing that too.”

Of his favourite images in the book, Elias

says: “The series I took of the Nova Scotia

Duck Tolling Retriever puppies is defi nitely

one of my favourites — they look like little

chicken nuggets!”

However, it’s not just cute images you’ll

fi nd in the book. “Unlike ‘The Dogist’,

there’s more written content; we explore

veterinary care and have information about

different breeds,” says Elias.
