Your Dog — November 2017

(sharon) #1

M

y little dog constantly scrapes up the
ground with his back legs when out on
a walk, showering us all with grass and
mud. He also occasionally wipes his face on the sofa
or on the legs of anyone unfortunate enough to be
sitting nearby! And one of his strangest habits is to
hold a toy pheasant in his mouth and fall fast asleep,
with the pheasant still fi rmly in place!
If you’ve ever wondered about your own dog’s
behaviour, check out our lead feature this month
(page 14). ‘Why does my dog...?’ takes a closer look
at some of our pets’ odd behaviours and explains all
about their origins. It’s a fascinating read!
You may think there are weeks to go before
the start of the festive season, but it will be upon
us before we know it. So now is the time to start
planning for a dog-friendly Christmas break and
our six-page Christmas special (starting on page
40) should get you in the mood. Full of gift ideas,
practical tips, advice on enjoying an alternative
Christmas, festive recipes, and great reads, it’s sure
to stir up some seasonal cheer — and there will be
more ideas and advice next month too.
Finally, who doesn’t love a Lurcher? With their
graceful, elegant looks and gentle, dignifi ed
temperaments, these dogs really are something
special. Lurcher expert Jackie Drakeford has joined
us this month to tell us more about the original
designer dogs and how they shape up as pets; see
page 56.
Enjoy this month’s issue.

COVER STARS
This month’s canine models are Springer
Spaniels Archie (left) and Mona (right).
Mona, described by her breeder Judy
Vallini as a chatty, active puppy, who liked to
smile, went to live with a master saddler in
West Sussex, along with her mum and another
spaniel. “I understand she still smiles a lot,”
says Judy.
Archie went to a family on the Sussex coast
and has a lovely time caravanning with his
family and big brother.
“All the puppies went to active homes; they
have all been very easy to train and have
wonderful personalities,”
adds Judy.
