STAR LETTER

WORDS AREN’T ENOUGH!
I would love to say a huge thank you through your magazine to
some very special friends. Last September, I was diagnosed with
leukaemia. Along with my wonderful husband, my reason for
living is to be back on the beach with my dogs on the beautiful
Isle of Wight where we live. I have been hospitalised for six
to 13 weeks at a time for treatment, but my amazing group of
‘doggy’ friends have been virtually queueing up to help with the
dogs, so my husband can spend more time visiting me. Th ey
walk them, call in to feed them, check on them, and even take
them home so they are not left alone too much.
Anyone who knows me understands that my dogs are my
life, so their happiness and well-being is so important to me.
I couldn’t face the treatment if I didn’t think it would get me
well enough to be back with them. Sassy is a little cross-breed,
adopted from our local rescue charity, and Gibbs is a pedigree
Bracco Italiano. He is a well-known fundraiser for charity, as
was Sassy in her younger days. I look forward to the day we
can all be home together again, but in the meantime I will
continue to be so very grateful to my many special friends,
two- and four-legged.

LOST WITHOUT BEN
On Valentine’s Day this year
I lost my big white German
Shepherd-cross, Ben, to bloat.
I was surprised how many
people have never heard of this
condition, despite the fact that

it is quite common in dogs with
deep chests.
Aft er being out late I arrived
home and fed my dogs at 2am.
I was on the phone by 2.19am
and then on my way to the vet’s,
but it was too late to intervene.

Having to make the decision to
let him go was the worst thing
I’ve ever been through.
I would really like to prevent
someone else going through
this. I’d had Ben for 12 years and
his loss is as painful today as it
was on that morning.

GOOD DECISION!
Having read the article about
Cockerpoos (October issue)
I would like to share my
experiences of owning
a Springerpoo. Rosko joined
our family in February this
year as a tiny eight-week-old

pup. I had
taken all
the usual steps of visiting him
at his breeders’, having crates
ready when he came home, and
purchasing an Adaptil plug-in as
well as a spray. He came home
with a cloth covered with his
mum’s and his siblings’ scent.
I hardly needed to use the
Adaptil plug-in at all, as Rosko
settled in happily right away,
feeling at home with us and my
three female dogs. He’s now
