LEND A HAND
Volunteering for an animal
welfare charity over the
Christmas period has to be one
of the most rewarding things
you can do. While many dogs
are lucky enough to have
a family with whom to spend
Christmas, there are some
who spend the day in rescue
centres. Most charities will
require you to do some training
before you are allowed to get
hands-on with the animals,
so if it’s something you’re
interested in, make sure you
contact your chosen charity at
least six weeks in advance to see
what their protocol is.

RETREAT
If you’re used to having
Christmas at home, you could
try something new this year by
staying somewhere you and
your dog will love. While there
are lots of places you can stay
which will accept dogs, few
places are as welcoming as
Craig Y Nos Castle (pictured),
set in the foothills of the Brecon

Beacons in South Wales. The
idyllic setting makes this B&B
an amazing dog-walking
hotspot, and you can even enjoy
a home-cooked Christmas roast
with your dog by your feet. For
more information, visit http://www.
dogfriendlywales.com or call
01639 730725.

ENJOY THE PEACE
If there’s a tourist destination
or dog-walking beauty spot
you’ve always wanted to visit,
but have been put off by
crowds, Christmas Day is the
time to go. You won’t have to
worry as much about keeping
your dog on a lead, and you

should be able to get some
great pictures.
It’s less likely that attractions
with entrance fees will be
open, but there are many
beaches, natural wonders, and
heritage sites you should be
able to enjoy. Hadrian’s Wall is
spectacular, marching 73 miles
across some of England’s wildest
countryside in Cumbria and
Northumberland. Although
the museum and forts will be
closed on Christmas Day, the
entire wall is free to walk. Take
a picnic, wrap up warm, and
enjoy exploring. For more
information, visit http://www.
english-heritage.org.uk

An alternative Christmas

If you’re looking to ring the changes this year, here are a few
alternative ways to spend the big day...

Hadrian’s Wall is a dog
walker’s delight.

An idyllic setting.
