COMPETITIONS.

We have teamed up with
Whinny & Woof Sculptures
to give two lucky readers the
chance of winning a bespoke
needle felt sculpture of
their dog.
Crafted in miniature
form, each handmade
sculpture is unique, offering
a personalised tribute to
a special four-legged friend;
they also make a beautiful
and thoughtful gift.
The sculpture is created
from natural wool fl eeces
through a method called dry
needle felting. The fl eeces,
which are mostly from sheep
native to the British Isles, are
washed and hand carded
before felting. A barbed
needle is used to interlock
the wool fi bres to form
a condensed material
— there are no supports
or stuffi ng within the pieces.
The winners will each
be required to provide
a selection of photos of their
dog from different angles,
so that a real likeness can be
captured in the sculpture.
A small piece of the animal’s
hair can also be included

within the sculpture.

A volunteer who has walked
dogs and fundraised for the
RSPCA for over 40 years
has been honoured for her
commitment with an Animal
Hero Award.
Sally Field, aged 98, from
Addlestone, Surrey, was
a guest of honour at the
awards ceremony in London,
which was hosted by Amanda
Holden and organised by the
‘Daily Mirror’, in association
with the RSPCA.
Sally took home the award
in the RSPCA Superstar of
the Year category, for her
work with the Millbrook
Animal Centre in Surrey. Of
her win, she says: “I wouldn’t
change it for anything,

looking after the dogs. I’m
so happy when I’m there.
I’m still going to carry on.
I will be up there tomorrow
walking the dogs!”
As well as volunteering in
the kennels, Sally is also
a member of The Friends
of The RSPCA Millbrook
Animal Centre, and has
worked with the group to
raise thousands of pounds
for the centre.
Sue Walters, manager
at RSPCA Millbrook, says:
“While a lot has changed
during Sally’s time as an
RSPCA volunteer, her
commitment and love for
the animals remains constant
and unwavering.“

A recently disabled animal lover is using her creative talents
to help bereaved pet owners cope with the loss of their pets.
Laura Remblance, from Flitwick, Bedfordshire, started
crocheting a year ago when she was diagnosed with
fi bromyalgia, and has now turned her hobby into a business
in order to help others.
She handcrafts one-of-a-kind plush toys, without patterns
or instructions, so each toy is unique and resembles the
deceased pet. Owners are required to send Laura pictures of
their pets so she can create a real likeness.
Inside the toys, Laura places a small
vial with the ashes of the pet
inside, which gives owners the
opportunity to hug and gain
physical comfort from the toy.
Laura says: “I found Conscious
Crafties, an online shop for talented
disabled people and their carers.
I realised my hobby could earn me a bit of
pocket money, and I could feel like
a valuable member of society again.”
