Caring for cats

at Christmas

If you need a break from all
the tinsel and turkey, spare
a thought for those cats
who don’t have a home and
will be spending the festive
season in care.
As many charities don’t
rehome cats over Christmas
and New Year, why not
consider volunteering at
your local cat charity to
bring some festive cheer
to a homeless cat, or even
fostering a cat so they have
a cosy home to snuggle
up in?
Kate Stapleford, who
volunteers for Cats
Protection’s Gosport
Branch, says: “At any one
time, Cats Protection is
looking after thousands of

unwanted cats across the
UK. I’ll often give the cats in
our care a healthy Christmas
dinner, as well as doing
all the usual tasks such as
socialising cats, cleaning out
cat pens, and taking cats to
the vet if needed.
“We generally don’t
home cats over Christmas,
as many cats do not settle
well into a new home during
this very busy time of year,
but cats and kittens can be
reserved for adoption so
that they can be collected
early in the New Year.”
Jo Richardson volunteered
at Blue Cross’s Burford
rehoming centre over
Christmas 2016, and says
she found it thoroughly
rewarding: “I volunteered
at the shelter on Boxing
Day which was really lovely.
It’s wonderful at that time
of year because we carry
out our standard duties
of cleaning, feeding, and
socialising the cats, but
with fewer cats to look
after, we can really spend
lots of time making sure the
ones who are left get tons
of attention.”
Burford’s kitty residents

get special Christmas bags
filled with lots of festive
goodies, including new
blankets, treats, and toys.
“It’s during these times
we remember just how lucky
our own pets are; they’re
warm at home while these
guys have to stay in the
shelter,” continues Jo. “It’s
why I love volunteering; I just
love making sure
I can give them the care and
love they deserve until they
find their own families.
It’s an amazing thing to
do whether you have pets
or not.”
Even if you pop in for an
hour or two at your local
cat welfare charity over
the Christmas period, it will
make all the difference to
the cats, who are sure to
enjoy some festive fuss. For
more information about how
you can volunteer at Blue
Cross or Cats Protection,
