Cats Protection’s clinical
veterinary officer
Dr Vanessa Howie says:
“I like to include my cat
Tilly in our celebrations,
so she always gets a bit
of cooked turkey and
a gift. She’s particularly
fond of playing with
fishing rod-style toys.”

Feline behaviourist Dr
Sarah Ellis says:
“At Christmas, as we
unwrap our presents,

I like to put all the
scrunched-up wrapping
paper in a big box ready
for recycling. However,
it doesn’t go out for
recycling for several
days because, first,
I throw some cat biscuits
and a catnip toy in it for
Cosmos to have hours
of fun.”

Behaviourist and
groomer Anita Kelsey
says: “My cats love
the odd treat of rare
steak — ethically
sourced, of course!
They have it for their
Christmas breakfast,
along with the latest
catty toys, which they
can then ignore!”

Christmas stars!

what they like to get up to with
their cats at Christmas.

Christmas cheer!

Don’t forget, it’s your cat’s Christmas

too! Here’s fi ve things you can do to

make your cat’s festive season special...

1

Make a toy — your cat will love
unwrapping it on Christmas
Day! To make it extra special,
why not make him a toy from
bits and pieces lying around
the house? You could use
an unwanted box or a
cardboard wrapping-paper tube
to make a DIY puzzle feeder.

feeders.html

2

Light a candle — Christmas is
a time when we spend time
with our friends and family,
and also remember those
no longer with us. Why not
take this opportunity to light
a candle, cuddle up with your
cat on your lap, and remember
your beloved cats who are no
longer around, but always in
your heart. Remember to always
place candles in a safe holder
and keep well out of your
cat’s reach.

3

Buy an advent calendar
— we all love the excitement
of opening the door on an
advent calendar, so why should
your cat be any different? You
can buy a wide range of advent

calendars for cats, from pet
shops and online, filled with
a delicious treat for each of
the 24 days of Christmas.
This will make the countdown
to Christmas Day exciting
for you both!

4

Put together a stocking
— stockings have been
a Christmas tradition for
centuries, and many of us still
enjoy putting together a few
small, inexpensive gifts in
a stocking for our loved ones.
Why not make one for your
cat with a little bag of treats,
a couple of catnip toys, a new
collar, and a new bowl? Our gift
guide should also provide you
with some inspiration!

5

Play a game — as you’ll
probably be spending
more time together over the
Christmas period, why not try
something new? If your cat likes
to chase, try throwing some
ping pong balls in an empty
bath tub for him to bat around.
Or, if he likes to pounce, a new
fishing rod-style toy will go
down a treat. And don’t
forget how much cats enjoy
an empty cardboard box!
