If you welcomed a new kitten into your home this year,

our top tips will ensure he has a happy fi rst Christmas.

Having friends and family

to visit at Christmas is

(mostly!) a cheerful occasion,

but having lots of noisy,

strange people around the

house can be scary for a new

kitten. Make sure he has easy

access to hidey-holes and

that he can always retreat to

a quieter part of the house.

Advise guests not to follow

him if he is hiding.

It might be tempting to

sneak your kitten a treat

at Christmas, but even

a small slice of turkey could

upset his stomach. Advice

from Cats Protection says:

“If you are giving a food

treat in addition to your cat’s

meals, remember to limit the

amount given so your cat

doesn’t gain weight. It is

best to stick to kitten food

treats rather than leftovers

or raw meat, although

a little bit of

well-cooked fresh

chicken or fish

is OK.”

All those

enticing

and irresistible

Christmas

decorations can

be dangerous for cats

and kittens, particularly items

like glass baubles, tinsel, and

fairy lights. It’s better to be

safe than sorry, so make sure

you keep him out of the room

when you’re not around.

Natural decorations, such as

holly, ivy, and mistletoe

are potentially toxic to cats,

so position them well away

from your kitty’s reach.

If you receive

any plants as

Christmas gifts,

check that they

are safe for cats.

After opening

presents,

be sure to clear

the room of elastic

bands and ribbons to

prevent your kitten nibbling

at them. Watch him around

wrapping paper as well

— but don’t forget to

keep a box or two for

him to play in!

days before the

festivities begin.
