from Exeter have found a kitten

with star quality.

Nola joined our household two weeks ago. For a kitten

so tiny — she was born on a farm, the smallest of a litter

of five — she has made a momentous impact, and ‘Life

before Nola’ seems a distant memory.

Her full name is Magnolia Ravenal (after the heroine of

the musical, ‘Showboat’), and she is already something

of a leading lady. Her timetable revolves around three

principal activities: sleeping, playing, and exploring.

You can tell when Nola is in exploring mode, because

her ears go back and she darts noiselessly around from

room to room. She crouches perfectly still — I swear she

holds her breath — then shoots to her next hidey-hole,

almost without touching the floor. Her favourite

observation posts are under sofas and beds, but you can

sometimes spot her peeping out from behind a shelf of

books, or in the wine rack, disguised as a fine Burgundy.

When she’s not being International Kitten of Mystery,

Nola likes to play. Before her arrival, we spent a small

fortune on fishing rod toys, fluffy mice, and a scratch post,

but she prefers the simple things in life, like a screwed-up

piece of paper, or bubble wrap. She enjoys an audience,

and kicks up quite a racket skittering across our wooden

floors, chasing, pouncing, and colliding with chair legs

along the way.

Without warning, Nola will then decide she’s had

enough and collapse on the nearest cushion or lap.

She adores being

stroked and tickled

all over, and will purr

for a few rapturous

seconds before

sinking into a deep,

satisfying sleep.

It took us three

years to decide to get

a kitten and to find the

perfect one, and Nola

was certainly worth

the wait.
