warm gear for later we were off up
the centre of the valley.
Everything started to become real
now, this place was out of
proportion to what we were used
to in Australia, we were walking
but it seemed we weren’t getting
closer to our destination that we
could see from camp.
We walked for over an hour,
getting closer to the big snow

covered basin at the top of
the valley. We sat for about half an
hour all glassing the slopes around
us, but nothing was seen. Tom
decided he was going to move up
the valley further and to keep
glassing. Tom was gone, Mat and
myself kept glassing and chatting.
I'd just said to Mat “funny how we
can just be here chatting but in a
few seconds we might see a tahr
and it gets serious real fast”. About a
minute later I looked up the valley
to see Tom about 800 metres away
waving his arms and rushing back.
I threw up the binos and he was
waving us over. That's it lets go, we
threw our packs on and took off
towards Tom, when we got to him he
just said, “there’s a big bull 200
metres..... hey where's my gear....” yer
we left it back there hahaha. I give
Mat my rifle and took off to get Toms

FACTS

NZ Tahr Origin
In April 1904 the New Zealand
government released five Himalayan tahr
given to them by the Duke of Bedford
from his heard at Woburn. The five tahr
were released in the Aoraki/Mt Cook
area and with no natural predators they
thrived in New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
Anyone wanting to hunt NZ with a guide I
couldn’t recommend Tom Jones enough, put
simply he’s a really nice guy that worked
really hard for his money and took us into
some awesome country. For more info visit
his website http://www.maindivideoutfitters.com
or find him on facebook.
