NZ TAHR

stuff, as I got to it he'd already caught
me, I threw his stuff in his pack and
he picked it up and we are off.
Getting back to Mat in a minute
we kept pushing on, I told Mat to
get going but he said “it's your
shot” thanks Mat no arguments
here, we had already decided Mat
could have first shot at a tahr
before the trip but after last week
him shooting 2 chamois even
though they weren't recoverable
and getting a hunt on a nice red
stag he gave me his shot now.
Tom was up front glassing for the
tahr he had seen and the big bull
tahr that was with them. He
couldn’t seem to find them so we
dropped off the edge of the tussock
and made our way below a little
rocky shale covered knob to come
over. One step glass one step glass
until we saw them, then we

crouched down and made our way
to the top of the knob in behind a
big boulder. I could see the bull
over Toms shoulder, He ranged the
bull at 340 metres and now it was
up to me.
I crawled forward, laid the rifle
down over my pack and lying in
behind the rifle I set the scope to 12
power and I'd already dialled the
shot in for 340 metres on the
Swarovski ballistic turret. All that
was left was to send a hand loaded
175gr Berger VLD hunting projectile
on its way from my Steyr Pro
Hunter chambered in 30.06. There

There’s a big bull 200 metres.....

hey where’s my gear?”
