MAINTENANCE

cause is present.

One problem often encountered is that many

tyre technicians tend to have trouble properly

diagnosing the causes of certain issues. The full list

of ways in which tyres issues can contribute to your

vehicular shake, rattle and roll is a long one. But here

are just some of the major ones:

  • Machine vibrates at certain speeds (particularly

high speeds) – tyres out of balance

  • Tyres have separated tread - requires tyres

replacement

  • Uneven tyre wear - requires tyres rotation &

mechanical inspection

  • Tyres are "out of round" and roll unevenly -

requires tyres replacement

Whether it’s from a pothole or a rock, a bent wheel

can often be fixed – provided there isn’t additional

hidden damage vibrations, especially in terms of

distinguishing a bent wheel from an out-of-round

tyre. That’s not actually a difficult process, but it’s
one that requires some care and knowledge that is
not often included in the basic get-in-there-and-do-
it training that most tyre techs get.

How to diagnose vibration issues: bent wheels,
out-of-round tyres.

When diagnosing any vibration issue, the order
of importance can be defined as WTAS: Wheels,
Tyres, Alignment and Suspension. There are other
possibilities; in one case I changed a customer’s
Skidsteer tyres over to puncture proof and they
soon complained of vibration issues. After refitting
the air-filled assemblies we noticed the vibration
was still evident, albeit lesser. A quick inspection of
the Skidsteer revealed that the LH engine mount
had not been properly welded at the assembly line
and the engine was not properly fixed which was
causing the vibration, not the solid aperture tyres.

If an operator comes to you complaining of a
vibration, your first question should always be
“Where exactly are you feeling this vibration?”
