this dark thriller sees Kevin Bacon’s

corrupt sheriff and his ’tache try to

reclaim his car from two kids on a joy

ride... With a corpse in the boot. Tense

and efficient it fi zzles out before the

end but there’s more than enough to

hint at what director Jon Watts could

do with a budget on Spider-Man. CH

teachers in The Faculty Elijah Wood

graduates to teacher battling evil kids

in this fun zombie fl ick co-written by

Insidious’ Leigh Whannell. It never

hits the heights of Peter Jackson’s

Braindead but the gore and gags keep

coming and the cast (particularly Rainn

Wilson) have a contagious blast. CH

➞There are so many family-in-a-

creepy-house franchises you need a

chart to keep up with all the Sinisters

and Conjurings. Making things more

complex still is this inessential prequel

setting up a new domestic unit then

sending them further into the Further.

It’s a decent creak-and-shrieker but

this stuff is starting to feel tired. NDS

The Final Shot
The last image is of Furiosa rising into Joe’s Citadel Max having melted into the crowds. “Very early on I had
him going up to the top of the Citadel with them” discloses Miller. “But Tom Hardy picked that up very early
— Max would never go. He wasn’t even remotely ready for that. We end on the idea of Furiosa and the others
taking over all the resources. It asks the question: are they going to do any better?”

The Toughest Shot
The sandstorm has CG elements of
course but Miller is proud that the fi lm’s
chases were done practically with
elements later composited into place.
The most complex? The shot of the
War Rig fl ipping blocking off a chasm
and freeing Max and Furiosa to head
to Joe’s Citadel. “Initially I thought
there was no way I was going to ask
a stuntman to fl ip that vehicle” says
Miller. Options including CGI and model
work were considered before brave
soul Lee Adamson volunteered. “We
only had one take to make sure we
got it exactly where it needed to be.”

Max And Furiosa In A Tree?

Although Max willingly becomes Furiosa’s blood

bag to save her life there was no talk of a romance

between the two. “The world was too fast and brutal

for them to have a chance of that” Miller says. “But

love in a sense is making a gift of oneself to another.

In a sense Max gives her her Green Place.”
