ON WATTS’

current status update:
pinching himself.
“In-between doing
Cop Car press and
prepping Spider-Man
it’s been crazy” he
smiles. “It’s kinda hard to believe.”
A year ago Watts might have
struggled to pick himself out of a line-
up. With just one feature — the
underrated horror fl ick Clown — under
his belt he wasn’t making huge waves in
the industry. Now the 34-year-old is
directing the latest Spider-Man reboot.
Cop Car is the movie that brought
him onto Marvel’s radar. A clinical
B movie about two kids who fi nd a police
cruiser and take it for a joyride invoking
the wrath of the corrupt sheriff to whom
it belongs it was a hit at Sundance.
Watts and his writing
partner Christopher
D. Ford wrote the
script in two weeks.
“We never thought it
would get made” he
says but things jumped
up a gear when Kevin
Bacon (above) became
interested in playing the
deranged Sheriff Kretzer.
“There was nothing in
the script about what he

looked like” says Watts. “Kevin sent
me a Photoshop mock-up of himself
and he had composited on a couple of
moustache ideas.” So Kevin Bacon is
a dab hand at Photoshop? Watts laughs.
“I like to think he was doing it himself...”
Now Watts is focused on Spider-
Man which this time has Kevin Feige
and Marvel Studios on board. He
confi rms that it won’t be an origin
story (“There are only so many times
you can kill Uncle Ben”) and reiterates
Feige’s previous claims that it will have
a touch of the John Hughes about it.
“I love the idea making a coming-of-
age high-school movie. We’re really
going to see Peter Parker in high school
and get deeper into that side of it” he
says. “He’s just 15 now.”
Watts was announced as director on
the same day that British
actor Tom Holland was cast
as Peter Parker. But he had
input into the decision.
“Tom was pretty perfect.
He’s very athletic. He can
actually do a backfl ip. If he
didn’t already capture the
spirit of the character
with that on top the
kid is Spider-Man.” CH

COP CAR IS OUT ON
OCTOBER 16.
