BFI LFF FOCUS
gets in the way of his search for vital
supplies ( booze).
It’s a big scene so Wheatley
decides to make things easier by staging
it all in one take. “The fi lm is massively
ambitious for the budget” he says.
“It’s a big set lots of movement lots
of characters. My attitude is always
to master it in a single and work from
there.” (Indeed in the fi nished fi lm the
shot has been broken into segments.)
Wheatley blocks out the action with
his actors and his DP Laurie Rose. It will
start with Purefoy and pals move onto
Hiddleston as he spots the tin of paint
he covets fl it on to Evans and conclude
with someone being hit on the back by
a fl ying tin of beans. It’s a glorious blend
of violent movement and precision; the
poetry of chaos. “Laurie Rose has this
great catchphrase which came out at the
end of the fi rst week” laughs Hiddleston.
“We were doing these extreme things in
such long takes and when we cut Laurie
would take his eye off the viewfi nder and
go ‘Fuck you cinema!’” CH
