STUDIO SECRETS

GET TO KNOW MIYAZAKI!

Studio Ghibli was
founded in 1985 by Hayao
Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki
and Isao Takahata. Its
first official film was
Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

To make sure there
wouldn’t be any
changes or edits made
to Princess Mononoke,
Studio Ghibli sent
Miramax Films a samurai
sword with the message
“NO CUTS.” It worked!

The Studio Ghibli offices are also the home of Ushiko,
a black and white cat, who can be found wandering
around the studio and sleeping on the rooftop garden.
The one place Ushiko won’t go is Miyazaki’s workspace!

Studio Ghibli is
named after an
Italian airplane,
the Caproni Ca.309,
whose nickname was
“Ghibli”, which means
“Desert Wind.”

Hayao Miyazaki works
from 11am to 9pm every
day, including Saturdays
and holidays! He only
takes Sundays off.

Miyazaki decided he
wanted to become
an animator after
watching the 1958
animated film The
Tale of the White
Serpent!

Despite announcing
his retirement in 2013,
Miyazaki is currently
working on a new film
called “How Do You Live?”.
Its estimated release
date is 2020-2021.

Miyazaki is a big fan of
children’s books! These are
his Top Five!
