PREPARATION AND CUTTING

1

From the solid cream fabric, cut:

  • Four strips, 4^11 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric and crosscut a total
    of 32 squares, 4^1 ⁄ 2 in (background).

2

From the light blue fl oral print
fabric, cut:

  • Three strips, 2^1 ⁄ 4 in across the width
    of the fabric (binding).

HALF-SQUARE
TRIANGLE UNITS

3

Rule a diagonal pencil line from
corner to corner on the wrong
side of all the cream squares.

4

Match a marked cream square,
right sides together, with a print
fabric square. Stitch^1 ⁄ 4 in either side of
the drawn line, as shown in Diagram

  1. Cut along the line to make two
    half-square triangle units and press
the seams towards the print fabric.

5

Repeat Step 4 to make a total of
64 half-square triangle units.

6

Trim the units to measure 4in
square exactly. To do this, place the
pieced square on a cutting mat, right
side up. Position a quilter’s ruler with
its 45-degree line matching the seam
and the right edge of the ruler just
inside the raw edge of the fabric. Trim
the two exposed edges of the square on

the top and right edge of the ruler with
a rotary cutter. (If you’re left-handed,
trim the top and left edges.) Rotate the
square by 180 degrees. This time when
the quilter’s ruler is put in position, the
45-degree line needs to match the seam
and the vertical line indicating 4in
needs to lie on the just-cut left edge of

the pieced square. Trim the remaining
two exposed edges of the square, as
shown in the diagram. Refer to Kristin’s
Trimming Tip and Diagram 2.
