PREPARATION AND CUTTING

1

From each of the nine solid
fabrics in assorted colours, cut:

  • Two strips, 3^11 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut them to yield
    12 rectangles, 3^1 ⁄ 2 x6^1 ⁄ 2 in of each
    fabric (blocks). From the leftover
end of the strips, cut two squares,
    2in of each fabric (cornerstones).

2

From the solid green fabric, cut:

  • Two strips, 3^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric. Crosscut them
    to yield 12 rectangles, 3^1 ⁄ 2 x6^1 ⁄ 2 in
(blocks). From the leftover end of
the strips, cut two squares, 2in
    (cornerstones)

  • Eight strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
    width of the fabric (binding).

3

From the solid white fabric, cut:

  • Five strips, 6^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric. Crosscut them
    to yield 30 squares, 6^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • 10 strips, 3^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut them to yield
    120 squares, 3^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • 12 strips, 2in across the width of
the fabric. Crosscut them to yield
    240 squares, 2in

  • Two strips, 12^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut them to yield
    42 rectangles, 2 x 12^1 ⁄ 2 in (sashings)

  • Another three strips, 2in across
the width of the fabric. Crosscut them
    to yield another seven rectangles,
    2x12^1 ⁄ 2 in (sashings)

  • Another eight strips, 2in across
the width of the fabric (border).

MAKE THE BLOCKS

4

Draw a light diagonal pencil
line from corner to corner on
the wrong side of each of the 2in
squares of white fabric.

5

Pin a square on two corners of
each 3^1 ⁄ 2 x6^1 ⁄ 2 in rectangle of solid
colour fabric. Sew on the line, trim
the corners^1 ⁄ 4 in outside the stitching
and flip the white fabric over so
that it is right side up, as shown in
Diagram 1. Press the seams towards
the white fabric. Your units should
measure 3^1 ⁄ 2 x6^1 ⁄ 2 in from raw edge
to raw edge.

6

To make a block, use four units
from Step 5 all made from the
same fabric, four 3^1 ⁄ 2 in white squares
and one 6^1 ⁄ 2 in white square. Lay them
out in three rows, referring to the
Flower Block Layout Diagram. Sew
the units in each row together. Press
the seams towards the coloured
fabric. Then sew the rows together,
carefully matching seams. Your block
should measure 12^1 ⁄ 2 in square from
raw edge to raw edge.

ASSEMBLY

7

Lay out the Flower blocks in six
rows of five blocks each, leaving a
little space between blocks. Play with
the distribution of colours until you
have an array that you like.

8

Adda2x12^1 ⁄ 2 in white sashing strip
vertically between the blocks in
each row. Sew the blocks and sashing

strips in each row together. Press
seams towards the sashing strips.

9

To make the sashing rows, lay
out fi ve rows of fi ve sashing strips
horizontally and put a 2in coloured
square between the strips in each
row. Sew the strips and squares in
each row together. Press seams
towards the sashing strips.

10

Add the sashing rows to your
layout between the block rows.
Sew the block rows and sashing rows
together. Press seams towards the
sashing rows.

KATE’S
VARIATION TIPS
This pattern lends itself to a wide
variety of fabric choices. My use
of solid colour fabrics on a white
background makes it a very
graphic piece. But you could
soften the eff ect by using pretty
floral-print fabrics, for example.
Make it a great kid’s ‘I Spy’ quilt
by using novelty print fabrics in
the large centre squares of each
block. Use checks and plaids –
recycle shirts perhaps? – to make
it for the man in your life. Why not
try swapping the position of the
white and coloured fabrics – white
petals on colour backgrounds – as
shown in Diagram 2? And it’s easy
to change the size of the quilt;
just make more or fewer blocks.
Twelve flowers, set in four rows
of three blocks each, would be
a good size for a young child.
