Australian Homespun — February 2018

(C. Jardin) #1
underneath inwards at a 90 degree
angle and the end on top at a 90
degree angle in the opposite
direction. Pin them in place.

11

Cut the excess away from the
end underneath so you cannot
see it. Trim the end on top a little
longer so it can be turned under
when you stitch it.

12

Slide one end of each stem under
the wreath and pin them in place.

13

Appliqué the wreath and stems
in place with small stitches just
catching the edge of the fabric,
worked in thread to match the fabric.
Sew both the inner and outer edges of
the bias. Turn under the upper bias
end by^11 ⁄ 4 in before stitching it in place.

FLOWERS, LEAVES
AND BUTTERFLY

14

Trace each of the shapes
for the fl owers, leaves and
butterfly from the Pattern Sheet onto
template plastic using a fi ne-point
permanent-marking pen. Cut the
shapes out on the traced line.

15

Trace around the shapes on
the right side of your chosen

5

Spray the strip with starch and,
once the starch has been absorbed
into the fabric, press one end of the
strip to stiffen it slightly. Feed this
end into the wider end of the bias
tape maker; press the strip as it
emerges from the narrow end, as
shown in Diagram 1.

6

Pin one end of the bias strip to the
sheet of paper on which you’ve
traced the wreath. The outer long
edge of the fabric should match the
circle. Ease the fabric around the
curve of the circle, pressing it as you
go. Pin the strip in place on the paper
to help it hold the shape. Once you’re
back to your starting point, cut the
strip so that the end overlaps the
beginning by about 1^1 ⁄ 2 in.

7

From the remainder of the strip,
cut four lengths for the stems.
Using the same method, press and pin
them in gentle curves over the lines
you’ve traced on your paper pattern.

8

Fold the 20in square of ticking
stripe Fabric Y in half horizontally
and vertically and finger press the
centre to crease it. Unfold the fabric.
Use a compass to draw a circle with
a diameter of 11in (radius of 5^1 ⁄ 2 in) in
the centre of the fabric lightly with
a pencil. Then draw over the line
with an erasable fabric-marking pen.

9

Carefully unpin the wreath and
stems from the paper pattern and
move them onto the background
square. Pin the wreath in place,
lining up the outer edge of the bias
with the circle. Refer to the photo
and the Pattern Sheet so that you
can position the join where the bias
strip begins and ends where it will
be covered by an appliquéd fl ower.

10

To neaten the ends of the bias,
overlap them, then fold the end

trace each of the four stems.
Alternatively, use the Pattern Sheet
itself if you wish.

Join the light turquoise bias strips
together end to end with a
diagonal seam to make one long strip.
Press the seam open.
