before starting the project.
It is recommended that
fabrics be 100% cotton,
pre-washed and well ironed.
Requirements are based on
fabric 107cm (42in) wide.

Seam allowances of^1 ⁄ 4 in are
used unless otherwise stated.
The appliqué method used
is fusible web with machined
free-motion straight stitch
close to the edges of the
shapes, but you can adapt the
instructions to your preferred
technique. Numbers shown in
the Materials list refer to the
individual appliqué shapes.
Instructions are given for using
the printed Pattern Sheet in
the magazine, but you can also
download the digital pattern
from http://www.homespun.net.au
and print it out.

CUTTING AND BACKGROUND
PREPARATION

1

From the medium brown tone-on-
tone print fabric, cut:

  • One rectangle, 8^1 ⁄ 2 x 11in (appliqué
    background)

2

From the brown spot print fabric, cut:

  • One strip, 2 x 18in (wide left
    border).

3

From the black and brown swirl
print fabric, cut:

  • One strip, 1 x 18in (narrow left border).

4

From the coffee cup print fabric, cut:

  • One rectangle, 8^1 ⁄ 2 x16^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • One rectangle, 10^1 ⁄ 2 x16^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (cushion back).

5

From the red plaid print fabric, cut:

  • Two strips, 1^1 ⁄ 8 in across the
width of the fabric (edge piping).

6

With right sides facing up, pin
the cotton lace trim in a vertical
line 2^3 ⁄ 4 in from the left edge of the

18in square of solid cream fabric
with its finished scalloped edge
facing to the right, as shown in
Diagram 1. Stitch it in place^1 ⁄ 8 in
from the left edge of the trim.

7

Pin the 1 x 18in black and brown
swirl print strip, right side down,
over the lace trim with the raw/left
edges level. Stitch^1 ⁄ 4 in from the
raw edges through all layers, flip
the black and brown strip over so
that it is right side up and press
to the left.

8

Pin the 2 x 18in brown spot print
strip, right side down, over the
brown swirl print strip with the raw
edges level at the left. Stitch^1 ⁄ 4 in from
the raw edges and press the spot
strip to the left.

9

Baste the brown spot print strip
to the cream background^1 ⁄ 8 in from
the left raw edge to keep it in place
as you do the appliqué.

10

Lay the red ricrac over the
seam between the lace and
narrow brown swirl border and stitch
it in place with matching thread. Cori
worked running stitch by hand down
the centre of the ricrac in thread that
matched the ricrac.

11

Fold the cream area of the
cushion front in half each way
and press the folds lightly to mark
the centre.

12

Trace the appliqué shapes from
the Pattern Sheet onto the
paper side of the fusible web, leaving
about^1 ⁄ 2 in between the shapes. (They
have been printed in reverse for your

convenience.) In Homespun, we
typically use broken lines on appliqué
patterns to indicate where shapes
underlap others. However, because
there are a lot of small shapes in Cori’s
design, we haven’t done so on this
occasion. You need to add a^1 ⁄ 4 in by
eye to shapes that lie under others.
Refer to Diagram 2 as an aid, where
broken lines are used to indicate the
extra areas to be added to shapes.

13

Cut the shapes out roughly and
fuse them to the wrong side
of the selected fabrics with a hot iron.
Then cut the shapes out accurately
on the lines.

APPLIQUÉ AND EMBROIDERY

14

Peel the backing paper from the
appliqué shapes in turn. Lightly
fold the medium brown background
rectangle in half in each direction.
Centre it on the cream area of the
cushion front, matching centre creases,
and fuse it in place. Repeat to centre
the coffee bean print inner border
rectangle over it and fuse it in place.

15

Layer the shapes #1-4 in
numerical order to create the
booth-seat background and fuse them
in place, as shown in Diagram 3.
Then arrange and fuse shapes #5-32
in numerical order.

16

Next, position the appliqué
letters and white daisies above
and below the centre design. As you
place these elements, keep them at
least 1in from all the raw edges of the
cream background fabric so they
