(C. Jardin) #1
don’t get trimmed off or sewn into the
seams. Fuse them in place.

17

For the coffee cups, Cori ironed
fusible web to the wrong side of the
remaining coffee cup print backing fabric
and fussy cut two spotted cup shapes

  • this explains why they are a slightly
different shape from those on the Pattern
Sheet. If you don’t have a suitable print
fabric to do something similar, prepare
two appliqué cup shapes from the Pattern
Sheet in the usual way, stack them as
shown and fuse them in position.

18

Put the Pattern Sheet over a lightbox
or brightly lit window and position
the cushion front on top. Use the pencil or
erasable marker to trace the ‘better when
shared’ phrase. Draw the lines on the
‘Coffee’ letters, the handles on the coffee
cups and the steam above them by eye.

19

Layer the calico square, batting
square and prepared cushion front,
all right side facing up, and pin baste the
layers together.

20

Using two strands of dark brown
thread, stem stitch the lines on the
‘Coffee’ letters, scatter a few French knots
to the left of the C and stem stitch the
‘better when shared’ phrase. The rest of
the embroidery is done after the appliqué
and quilting.

21

Drop (or cover) the feed dogs on your
machine and fi t the free-motion/
darning foot. Machine stitch just inside
the raw edges of each appliqué shape with
matching thread. When all the appliqué
shapes and letters are appliquéd in place,
use cream thread to quilt the background

  • Cori did a swirly design in the open spaces
    on the cream background.

22

Using two strands of tan thread,
stem stitch the steam rising from the
stacked cups and add a few starbursts in
radiating straight stitches. Use two strands
of dark brown thread to stem stitch the
handle on each coffee cup and the hemline
of the cream dress. Then stem stitch the fold
lines on the cream dress in two strands of
cream thread. Stem stitch the hemline and
fold lines on the red dress in two strands of
red thread. Cori’s stacked cups have red rims
in the printed design; you could stem stitch
red rims on your cups if desired.

23

Trim the cushion front to measure
1611 ⁄ 2 in square, raw edge to raw edge.
The border strips should be level with the
edges of the cream fabric and the design
centred on the cream fabric. To acheive
this, Cori trimmed about^3 ⁄ 4 in from each edge.
