Australian Homespun — February 2018

(C. Jardin) #1

25

Fit the zipper foot to the machine
and set it to a long stitch length.
Sew along the red plaid fabric close
to the cord to encase it in the fabric.

26

Starting halfway along the
bottom edge of the cushion
front, pin the piping around the edge
of the cushion front, raw edges level,
easing it around the corners. To join
the ends when you get back to the
start, undo a short section of basting
on one end and trim the cord about

(^33) ⁄ 4 in from the end of the fabric. Fold
under a^1 ⁄ 4 in hem at the raw end and
press. Trim the other end of the
covered piping cord so that it meets
the end of the cut cord exactly and
insert it inside the folded end of the
fabric, as shown in Diagram 6. You
should have a continuous length of
covered piping with no raw edges
now. Baste the piping to the
cushion front using the zipper foot
once more.

Set the machine to a regular
stitch length, with the zipper
foot still in place. With right sides
together, sew the one side of the
zipper tape to the 8^1 ⁄ 2 x16^1 ⁄ 2 in back
rectangle, as shown in Diagram 7.
Sew to the ends of the tape, not just
adjacent to the zipper teeth. Press the
fabric away from the zipper.
28
Repeat Step 27 with the 10^1 ⁄ 2 x
161 ⁄ 2 in rectangle and the other
zipper tape, right sides together as
before. You should now have the
exposed zipper facing out with the
backing rectangles either side, as
shown in Diagram 8. Press.
29
To form the lap over the
zipper, fold the 10^1 ⁄ 2 in side over
the zipper for 1in and press. Pin and
stitch as shown in Diagram 9, moving
the zipper tab out of the way as you
sew across the ends. Take care not to
hit the metal ends with the needle.
