PREPARATION AND CUTTING

1

After removing the selvedges,
from the white low-volume print
fabric, cut:

  • One length, 70in across the width
of the fabric and crosscut two
    rectangles, 17 x 70in

  • Two strips, 17in across the width
    of the remaining fabric (background).

2

Sew the 17 x 42in strips together
on their short ends and trim the
strip to measure 17 x 70in so you now
have three strips, 17 x 70in. Lay them
out side by side with the joined strip on
the right. Join them on their long edges
with a^11 ⁄ 4 in seam allowance and press
the seams open. The background is
now 70 x 50in and will be trimmed
to the fi nished size later.

3

On a large sheet of paper, draw a
grid of 4in squares, nine squares
high and four squares wide. Copy the
scale diagram of Leaf 1 onto your
grid to make an appliqué pattern.

4

Use the same process to create
appliqué patterns for Leaf 2 and
Leaf 5 referring to their scale diagrams.

5

Referring to the Leaf Cutting List,
trace the required number of each
appliqué shape from the patterns you
created in Steps 3 and 4 and from the
Pattern Sheet onto the paper side of the
fusible web, leaving about^1 ⁄ 2 in between
the shapes. Mark them with their
numbers and cut them out roughly.
Trace one chameleon shape and cut
it out with a generous allowance.

6

Cut the centre out of the larger
shapes, leaving about^3 ⁄ 8 in of
fusible web inside the traced
outlines. Reducing the amount of
fusible web behind large shapes
makes the finished quilt less stiff; use
the fusible web cut from the centre
of the large shapes for the small
shapes on Leaves 6 and 7.

7

Fuse the shapes for the leaves
and stems to the wrong side of
the appropriate fabrics, referring to
the photograph and Leaf Cutting List
as guides to colour placement. Cut
them out accurately on the lines.
Set aside the fusible-web chameleon
shape for now.

8

From the black and white stripe
print fabric, cut:

  • Six strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
    of the fabric (binding).

MANDY’S
SIMPLICITY TIP
Joining strips of diamonds
together for the chameleon
can be a little fiddly. If you
wish to simplify the process,
you could cut your patchwork
panel in Step 16 at a 90-degree
angle for a chequerboard of
squares rather than diamonds.
