Turn the piece over, remove
the stabiliser and trim the
surplus batting around the
chameleon close to the stitching.25
Remove any remaining
stabiliser from the back of the
leaves and press the whole piece.
Using a large cutting mat, trim the
edges of the background fabric,
keeping the corners exactly 90
degrees. Mandy trimmed her quilt
top to 60 x 45in. (The heavy stitching
may have slightly distorted the
background fabric.)FINISHING

Cut the backing fabric in two
equal lengths and remove the
selvedges. Sew the pieces togetherside by side with a^11 ⁄ 2 in seam and
press it open.27
The backing, batting and
top are ready for a longarm
machine as they are. If you’re doing
the quilting by hand or on a domestic
machine, refer to Step 10 on page 112
to layer and baste the quilt.28
Quilt as desired. Mandy used
cream thread and fi lled the
background with free-motion pebble
quilting. She stitched around thechameleon, leaves and stems and
added quilted ‘veins’ to the leaves.
She also quilted in the ditch of all the
diamonds on the trapunto chameleon
so he became very textural. Mandy
says there are many free-motion
possibilities to try out on this
wallhanging, so have fun with it!29
