PREPARATION AND CUTTING

1

From each of the fat quarters of
assorted print fabrics, cut:

  • Four strips, 3^11 ⁄ 4 in across the 21in
width of the fabric. Crosscut them to
yield 28 squares, 3^1 ⁄ 4 in of each fabric.

2

From the solid white fabric, cut:

  • 26 strips, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut them to yield
    720 squares, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • Nine strips, 6in across the width
of the fabric. Crosscut them to

yield 72 rectangles, 3^1 ⁄ 4 x 6in and
18 squares, 6in.

3

From the green print fabric, cut:

  • Seven strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
    width of the fabric (binding).

MAKE THE BLOCKS

4

Draw a light diagonal pencil line
from corner to corner on the
wrong side of each of the 1^1 ⁄ 2 in
squares of white fabric.

5

Pin two squares on opposite corners
of each 3^1 ⁄ 4 in square of print fabric

6

Sew on the line, trim the corners

(^1) ⁄ 4 in outside the seam, flip the
white fabric over so that it is right
side up and press the seams open.
Your units should measure 3^1 ⁄ 4 in
square from raw edge to raw edge.
7
To make an X block, use four units
all made from the same print fabric.
Lay them out in two rows, as shown in
the photograph. Sew the units in each
row together, then sew the rows
together, carefully matching seams.
Your block should measure 6in square
from raw edge to raw edge.
8
Repeat Step 7 to make a total of
54 X blocks.
9
To make an O block, use four units
all made from the same print fabric.
Lay them out in two rows, as shown in
the photograph. Sew the units in each
row together, then sew the rows
together, carefully matching seams.
Your block should measure 6in square
from raw edge to raw edge.
10
Repeat Step 9 to make a total
of 36 O blocks. You will have
four print squares left over – they are
not used in this project.
ASSEMBLY
11
To combine the blocks into
super blocks, choose six X
blocks, four O blocks, eight white
rectangles, 3^1 ⁄ 4 x 6in and two white
6in squares.
12
Lay out these units in four
rows, referring to the Super
Block Layout Diagram for placement.
Swap like blocks around until you
have an array of colours and prints
that you like.
