Camper Trailer Australia — December 2017

(ff) #1

As the world’s environmental policy-makers dither; ignoring

hard-won scientific truths, it’s important those with even a

passing interest in our precious outdoor reserves and wilderness

areas work together to prevent exploitation of regions where no

firm and binding protective laws are in place.

T

here’s beentwo huge political
decisions to do with the enviroment
inthepastweeks.Onedomesticand
one international. Domestically, one of
China’s major banks has categorically rejected
aproposaltofundtheAdanimineprojectin
Queensland’s Galilee Basin.
On 3 December, the Industrial & Commercial
Bank of China (ICBC) issued a statement indicating
it had no intention of funding Adani's proposed
mineinQueensland.
"ICBC has not been, and does not intend to be,
engaged in arranging financing for this project,"
theICBCsaidinastatementonitswebsite.
The proposed funding was earmarked to help
develop a road and port complex at Abbot Point,
about 50 clicks north of the Whitsunday Islands
on the southern fringe on the Great Barrier
Reef. Any tanker and coal vessel movement in
and out of Abbot Point would inevitably prove
disastrous for the ecosystem; any accident or
spill would seriously threaten the already fragile

reefsystem.Aswell,thecoalextractedfromthe
mine for consumption in India would boost the
world’s carbon output, adding to the reef’s already
significant existential problems.
According to Professor Samantha Hepburn,
director of the Center for Energy and Natural
Resources Law at Deakin University, "the Adani
mine has been predicted to generate 128 million
tons of carbon dioxide every year. This is equivalent
to a quarter of Australia's total current emissions
from fuel combustion. It does not matter that the
coal will be burned overseas — climate warming
from greenhouse gas emissions is a global
phenomenon."
Just a day later, on 4 December, US President,
Donald Trump, announced his administration was
rescinding 85 per cent of Bears Ears National
Monument and nearly half of Grand Staircase-
Escalante National Monument in Utah. This is a
breathtakingly aggressive and wrong-headed
decision which, seemingly, only serves to unwind
environmental protective policy in order to open up
territory for destructive mining and land-clearing
activity.
We are but temporary custodians of the world’s
wilderness areas. It’s the absolute pinnacle of willful
ignorance and selfishness to exhaust irreplaceable
magnificence for short-term financial or political
gain.
Camper magazine applauds the Industrial &
Commercial Bank of China for their decision to
not fund the Adani mine and stands alongside our
brothers and sisters in the outdoor and adventure
community in condemning the Trump regime for its
decision to drastically scale back protection of the
Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National
Monuments.
