THERE’S AN ART TO crafting a good
setlist. To start with a quiet one, or hit ’em
loud and hit ’em hard from the off? That is the
question. Do you deluge an audience with the
hits, or throw in a few deep cuts for the real fans?
Those decisions have been on Hans Zimmer’s
mind for the last couple of years as he’s been
travelling the world, with an orchestra, playing
tracks from his extensive back catalogue of
movie scores. We asked the German composer
to give us an insight into his setlist choices...

DRIVING/DISCOMBOBULATE/
ZOOSTERS BREAKOUT
For a man capable of LOUD NOISES, the
show starts with Zimmer, alone, playing the
theme from Driving Miss Daisy on a piano.
“I used to have stage fright, and thought, ‘If I
can get to the piano and sit down and play the
fi rst four bars without running and screaming off
the stage, we might get through the show,’” he
laughs. The orchestra is then revealed, via a black
curtain drop, as they segue into... a track from
Madagascar. “It’s a disco thing. The orchestra
gets to play loud right away. It’s as if they were
in the middle of a late EDM party.”

concert setlist

GLADIATOR MEDLEY
Still early in the set, Zimmer keeps it gentle
with a retooled version of his famous
Gladiator theme, with the emphasis
on guitar.
“I didn’t want to do Gladiator at all,” he admits.
“I kept thinking, I can’t make it work. It’ll be
boring. But when I originally wrote the score,
I actually wrote the whole middle section as
a guitar piece, so I felt that I could go back to
that idea. And then it became interesting.”

CIRCLE OF LIFE/KING OF
PRIDE ROCK
Now things are beginning to heat up, with
a medley from The Lion King. For this, Zimmer
is joined by Lebo M, the singer who belted out
the memorable chant that opens the fi lm. The
two go back years.
“He has a habit of disappearing,” laughs
Zimmer. “He turned up just 10 minutes
before we recorded the score. That is literally
the fi rst take in the movie. Here, he comes in
completely cold and is belting it out. I think
it’s my little revenge for him being so late on
the recording.”
