The Dual Sport Motorcycle Riders’
Association is a national body with branches in
all states, that was founded in 1997 by Peter
Barber and Sidetrack, and former ADB, editor
Tony Kirby. The DSMRA runs events that range
from local branch trailrides like the Canberra
Tumut Ride to national events like the annual
DSMRA Kowen Forest Ride in the ACT that draws
hundreds of participants. To find out more and

adventure
Believing variety is the spice of life, on
the Sunday I joined punters on the
adventure ride being staged for the
first time in conjunction with this
year’s C to T. They’d had a mint run of
some 400km on the Saturday, one of
the ‘highlights’ coming from a bloke
named Gerard, whose throw-over
saddlebags melted on the muffler and
torched his gear. Thankfully sweep
rider Doug Waterhouse was able to
catch him, flag him down and douse
the flames before they had to deal with
a DR-Z400 bonfire.
With Andrew Stacey out front, our
ADV posse covered 360km on the
Sunday, following a ripper route
plotted by Steve Donkers. We started
with awesome views over Blowering
Dam south of Tumut, then looped all
the way back to town via stunning farm
and grazing land near Batlow and
Adelong, before turning east into the
Brindabellas to set sail back toward
Canberra.
“We definitely put the dualsport
back into the Dual Sport Motorcycle
Riders’ Association this weekend,”
Stacey enthused as we chowed down
on a cafe feed at lunchtime.
And that they did, as the ADV
component adds another dimension to
this event, given 65 is the absolute
maximum for the trailride to remain
manageable.
