REMEMBERING

PETER MELTON
ADB ACKNOWLEDGES THE passing of Australian motocross and
supercross legend Peter Melton who died while riding in Willowbank,
Queensland. Melton enjoyed a career that spanned more than 20
years through the 1980s and ‘90s and enjoyed plenty of success with
multiple national motocross and supercross titles.
He was the 1992, 1994 and 1996 Australian Supercross Champion
and 1996 Australian Supercross Masters champion, 1996 Australian
Motocross Champion, 1999 500cc Australian Motocross Champion
and the last Australian 500cc Motocross champion, winning the title
in 2000 before the class disappeared. Melton also won over 15 state
motocross championships.
He was a fi erce competitor, champion and a loyal athlete to his
brands and experienced huge success riding for Yamaha and Kawasaki.
On the bike Melton had an abundance of natural talent, making him a
strong competitor while his dedication and technique was marvelled at
by an entire generation.
Off the bike, the Queenslander’s laid back style, down-to-earth
personality and friendliness made him a fan favourite. Melton was
also a coach and mentor, helping shape Australian motocross and
supercross into the successful professional sports they are today.
A funeral was held for Melton at Centenary Memorial Gardens,
Brisbane, with a huge turnout paying their respects. Our thoughts are
with his family and friends during this diffi cult time.

THE WORLD’S PREMIER action
sports competition, X Games, is
coming to Australia in 2018 with
action set to go down from 19-
October at Sydney Olympic Park. It
will be the fi rst time in the event’s
20-year history that an X Games
event has taken place here, which is
surprising given Australia is home
to some of the world’s best action
sports athletes.
Australian athletes hold 138
medals, 45 of them gold, from X
Games summer and winter events.
“I’m excited about X Games coming
to Australia in 2018,” said Clinton
Moore, Australian FMX rider and
fi ve-times X Games medallist.
“I feel like in every X Games I’ve
competed in in the past, it has been
on their turf but to have it here in
Australia, I feel like it’s my X Games
to defend, and there’s nothing like
having the support of your own
country.” U.S. broadcaster ESPN
announced the event would be held
in partnership with Australian free-
to-air network Seven West Media.
“It’s really exciting to fi nally
bring the X Games to Australia,”
said Tim Reed, ESPN X Games vice
president. “Australian athletes have

played a huge part in the history
of X Games, earning 138 medals
and providing many memorable
moments. We’re thrilled to bring
the event to their backyard, where
ESPN’s strong connection with a
millennial audience is evident. The
country and culture are perfect and
we have a world-class partner in
Seven West Media, which will make
this a special event for everyone
involved.”
In addition to the action sports
competition including FMX, BMX
and skateboard competition, X
Games Sydney will feature musical

performances, art installations and
a festival experience.
Organisers claim the fi rst
Australian X Games will capture our
culture and showcase the city of
Sydney in everything from course
designs, medals, festival village and
in the live coverage.
