DECEMBER 1987 // ISSUE #100 // 110 PAGES // $3.95

A BOMB EXPLODED on PanAm Flight 103 over
Lockerbie in Scotland, the movies Rain Man, Die Hard,
A Fish Called Wanda and Young Einstein were
released, Australia celebrated its bicentennial, Ben
Johnson won the 100m gold at the Seoul Olympics
and was then disqualifi ed for taking anabolic steroids,
Newcastle Knights played its fi rst game in the NSWRL
and the fi rst episode of Home and Away went to air.
Thirty years later, it’s still going but the plot lines are a
little more bizarre.

WHAT HAPPENED
BACK THEN...

For his Refl ections column,
GE tried to sum up 100
issues of ADB in one page,
listing how it started, his
most memorable bikes, the
most memorable events, the
changes he’d seen and the
people he’d met.

The letters page carried
congratulatory epistles on
the 100th issue from PM Bob
Hawke, ex-PM Malcolm Fraser,
Lindy Chamberlain, America’s
Cup legend John Bertrand and
Honest Muz. They may have
been fakes.

Maico underwent a rebirth
under the guidance of
German businessman Lorenz
Merkle. Using the resources
of his family’s hospital
appliances company he
planned to make 250, 320
and 500cc motocross and
enduro models.

Geoff Ballard announced plans
to import U.S-built ATK two-
stroke machines for 1988.

The president and secretary
of the ACCA travelled to
Europe to attend the FIM
Congress but were denied
voting rights because
Australia hadn’t paid its
affi liation fees.
