Who sweats

more, men

or women?

If you’ve been the victim of
an overabundance of DNA
left behind by the dude
who just vacated the bench
press, you might argue that
men are the soggier gen-
der. However, according
to research published in
Experimental Physiology,
the amount you sweat has
less to do with gender and
more to do with body shape
and size: whoever is larger
between two people —
whether the same gender
or not — will be the damper
of the duo. Here’s why: your
body cools itself either by
sweating or by increasing
blood circulation to the skin’s
surface. Smaller people
have more surface area per
kilo of bodyweight and are
more dependent on heat
loss through circulation and
less dependent on sweating,
while larger people are the
reverse.
Takeaway tip: sweat hap-
pens, no matter who you are
or what you look like. Stock
up on gym towels and hand
sanitiser to keep germs on
the down low.

Thirty per cent of women who overcome breast
cancer experience a recurrence, according to
Breastcancer.org. But a meta-analysis of 22 studies
found that women who participated in physical
activity significantly reduced their risk of another
bout with the big C. Get moving with one of these
great events, and protect your own health while
raising money to help others preserve theirs.

McGrath Foundation Pink Test
McGrath Breast Care Nurses help individuals
(and their families) experiencing breast cancer by
providing physical, psychological and emotional
support. From the time of diagnosis and through-
out treatment, whether you’re in the private or
public health system, this support is available to
you from day one if you want it — for free and for
as long as you need it. The Sydney Pink Test starts

on 4 January — the Fifth Ashes Test. As well as
being the final match of this Ashes series, it's also
the 10th Pink Test, with Day 3 now known as Jane
McGrath Day, where the entire SCG becomes a
sea of pink. Every person who registers at pink-
stumpsday.com.au receives a pink cricket kit
containing stumps, a bat, ball, bails, bandana, zinc
cream, a tape and a collection box — all in pink.

Relay for Life
Assemble a team and take turns walking around
a track or designated path for up to 24 hours
(depending on the event) to remember loved ones
lost, honour survivors and raise money for Cancer
Council to make a global impact on cancer.

KNEES TO KNOW Women are more likely than men to develop knee
osteoarthritis in later years, according to research published in Arthritis
