Balanced Conversations

Deborah Hutton on balancing the
good with the bad at Christmas.

I

love a good celebration. Birthdays,
Christmas, weddings, reunions
and anniversaries; imagine how
dull life would be without these little
milestones along the way.
Ideally these occasions should
be full of joy, but sometimes the
celebrations remind us of the things
we don’t have and people we’ve lost.
It’s times like these I look back
on a very ‘joyful’ interview we did
with Amanda Gore, chief executive
of the Joy Project. Gore says we are
joyful by nature, so if we can catch
our fears and put some perspective
on our challenges, we can find
balance and happiness.
Coming into Christmas and
the pressures it can bring, I like
to remember this quote from her:
“Everything always depends on
the way in which things are done —
not so much what one does but the
spirit in which one does it.”

My interview with Gore is
our feature interview for Balanced
Conversations on Virgin Inflight
Entertainment this month, along
with Lucy Turnbull, Dr Libby
Weaver and Starlight Foundation
CEO, Louise Baxter. Weaver chats
about what causes stress and how
to go from exhausted to energised.
Turnbull talks about her career,
marriage and defining moments.
Safe to say, the theme of the
conversations is the value of looking
after yourself, being grateful for
your life and finding joy in giving.
For a number of years, I’ve been
privileged to be an ambassador for
the Starlight Children’s Foundation
and Olivia Newton John’s Cancer
Wellness Centre. Of all of my work,
this is by far the most rewarding.
So this Christmas, I urge you to give
a little, find some joy and celebrate
life and love. Merry Christmas!
